In fact, we can look at the entire banking sector, the entire financial sector (not just banks) — and the relative strength of these sectors. It’s a worthwhile look!

QQQ: PowerShares QQQ NASDAQ 100 Exchange Traded Fund

We have prepared a short video (less than five minutes) analyzing the current point and figure chart for QQQ, which is the exchange traded fund representing the NASDAQ 100 Index, issued by PowerShares. This ETF (exchange traded fund) invests in the index, which is the top 100 names found on the NASDAQ 100 Index. The top few names in the basket include Apple, Microsoft, Google, Oracle, Intel, Cisco, Qualcomm and Amazon. It covers a LOT of recognizable technology names, so this represents an easy way for investors to get into some very recognizable technology names without a lot of fuss, or cost.

This ETF has been popular over the years, but popular only wins in school board elections. So I would also add the following: Past performance may not be indicative of future results. Top-Down vs. Bottom-Up Approach

January 2012: the US market is off to a good start. It’s hard to predict what the rest of the year will bring, but indicators like the Santa Claus rally and the January Effect are working. There is no fundamental basis that the “January Effect” or “Santa Claus Rally” will bring success in 2012.

Sectors working well so far in the new year include Machinery, Electronics (in Manufacturing), Biotech.
Even some retailers are seeing positive breakouts appear on their charts. Suddenly, Consumer Discretionary names are breaking out daily. And with that (amazingly), the home-building sector is also working its’ way higher on the charts: NOT necessarily the actual home-builders, but companies that sell things going IN the house (paint, furniture, etc).

Some of these sectors which are participating are sectors that (historically) participate in the early stage of a bigger move. With many sector and individual charts starting to broaden out, this positive move in the market MAY have some legs here. But again, we do NOT make predictions.

Financial companies are still lagging. These charts provide some interesting speculation off the bottom, but there is still FAR too much risk in the group to think about buying across the board for all clients. Financial stocks — at the present time — appear really for traders only.

The approach we employ to manage money for clients is a “top-down” approach. When comparing top-down vs. bottom-up styles, there really could not be two different approaches.
We use a top-down approach, employing relative strength and point & figure charts.
The first step we need to know is, is the market on offense or defense? If it is on defense, our entire strategy changes from wealth-building (trying to make money) versus wealth preservation (trying to protect our assets to play another day).
Next, we need to know what area of the globe do we want to be in now? In the 1980′s, it was a US-driven market. But we have seen periods in the past few years where the US markets were one the WORST places to invest. We need to know that!

Next, which sectors are favored? And then, which sectors have the best relative strength?
At this point, with the vast (and still growing number of Exchange Traded funds (ETF’s), some folks can stop right there and simply stick with the sectors providing the best opportunities.
We then drill down one more level and want to know which are the names (companies) leading the sectors?

A bottom-up manager would employ the exact opposite: they are looking at the specific company fundamentals to choose where to place their money. Companies with strong fundamentals, low P/E ratios, growing market share, great management are things that matter most to bottom-up money managers. To a bottom-up manager, it does not really matter if the sector is in or out of favor, or even if the market is on offense or defense. I would also add the following:

My 401k is Very Diversified

So many times I’ll meet a new client and they will tell me, “Even though my retirement account at work is totally diversified, I still lost money. Why?”

Was it REALLY diversified?

In this video, I show you how there is so much over-lap among large cap mutual funds. It’s pretty sobering when I show clients how many of the same names appear over and over in MOST of their large cap funds. Some of the investments mentioned here include the Vanguard Institutional Index fund (VIIIX), the T Rowe Price Equity Income fund (PREIX), the Fidelity magellan fund (FMAGX), the Eaton Vance large Cap fund (EILVX).

Positive Trend Can Be Your Friend

After a good run in late October, the last day of October AND now the first day of November are off to a thud. What’s happening?

There is a significant difference between the market action in late July – early August and now. The drop in August was enough to break support lines. But at the present time, we are operating in a positive trend… a big difference. While the market carries a long-term negative (bearish) outlook, there will be times where the short and intermediate term is positive.

For example, in 2008, we had similar long term bearish market tones, but yet we had a sustained three month rally starting in late spring that made (guys like me) scratch our heads. I would also add the following:

Is the Morgan Stanley Emerging Markets Index Fund (symbol MGEMX) available in your retirement plan at work? MGEMX may be available in your deferred compensation plan or your 401k plan. NFLX Netflix as of September 29, 2011

Sell Signals: Not to be ignored

Netflix (symbol NFLX) is a great example (at the present time) of what happens if investors ignore sell signals. One of the great features of point and figure charts is that they often have clear actionable points along the way. Netflix (NFLX) gave several sell signals throughout July, August and September 2011 before breaking the support line and completely falling out of bed. Take a look at this short video for a walk-through on sell signals and what can happen if you ignore them.

After seeing the Netflix (NFLX) chart generate a steady string of buy signals all the way up — there was not a single sell signal early in the year — we saw multiple sell signals in a row (not one buy signal) once the stock began to fall in July. We cannot predict what the future holds for Netflix. But do not ignore multiple sell signals.

This is the Dow Jones Industrial Average (September 26, 2011 close). This is a 100-point box chart (each box along the side represents 100 points on the Dow Jones).

We have been range-bound between 11500 on the high side and 10700-10800 on the low end since early August.
The overhead resistance line now sits at 11400. So if the market continues its’ range-bound ways, we are going to have a big test if we can get up near that 11400-11500 point. A break THROUGH those levels would help put the market in a positive trend.

Of course, if the resistance line holds, we could be looking at more downside. It is still risky out there.

Each week, John Dorfman (syndicated columnist from Bloomberg.com and chairman of Thunderstorm Capital in Boston) publishes a weekly column. If you live in central NJ, his column is carried each week on Sunday in the Asbury Park Depress. His column is published in many papers around the country.

Dorfman recommends several stocks each week. What WE DO is take *his* recommendations and look at them on a point and figure chart. Dorfman is a value manager, he wants to buy beaten down companies at pennies on the dollar. The problem with the “value approach” is investors need the patience of Job to see if (and when) these recommendations ever work out.

Big Picture Looks Positive

Weekly Commentary for March 15, 2011

Before today (March 15), the market is up roughly 4% for the year (since January 1st).

Since the market peak (short term) on February 17th, the market is down 4%. But it *feels* much worse than it actually is.

Now, all we read in the papers is “sensational” news. We have had some CRAZY world events. Short term, this market WILL be sloppy …driven by news. But the bigger picture still looks very positive.

For example, in late 2007, “money market” charts began to strengthen compared to stocks. Which spelled trouble for 2008. We are no where near those kinds of readings. Again, nowhere near anything like that.

The main thing I remind clients is everyone has a different comfort level.

The more important question:
At what level will YOU be OK?
Will that be 100% out of the market?
Will it be 50% out?

Very few (in my profession) have any answer for these questions.

Part of the reason is because so many are conditioned to be “perma-bulls:” they are pre-disposed to staying optimistically bullish, and keeping you invested in some far-off fantasy where everything works out great. Hey, life is not all purple pansies, sometimes things get messy. And sadly, some folks in my line of work get defensive/bearish AFTER the fact, when it is too late. Then they miss the next move.

In repeated conversations with clients, we hear the same phrases:

“Tom, we do not like the news/the headlines…”
“The economy worries me…”
“Tom, I do not like this stock market”

And, as soon as they mention those phrases, they get in a defensive posture. They are conditioned to hear their adviser tell them “you have to look long term.”

We will not be optimistically bullish 100% of the time.
There are times we want to be IN the market.
There are times we want to be OUT of the market.

How to Find The Best Financial Planner in Manasquan, NJ

A while back, a friend who had just moved to New Jersey asked me, “How do I find the Best Financial Planner in Manasquan?”

This friend admitted to me he did not know the difference between a stockbroker and a financial planner. And being new to Monmouth County, he did not necessarily need the BEST financial planner in New Jersey; he really needed a personal financial planner who could work with him and help him out.

I told him; “Maybe we should outline the differences between a financial planner and a stockbroker.” He replied, “Well, I heard financial planners sometimes sell life insurance, so maybe you should tell me the difference between a financial planner and a life insurance agent or insurance broker.”

“And for that matter,” he continued, “I do not know the difference between an investment adviser and a financial planner!”

Finding The Best Financial Planners in NJ is Not Easy

Have you ever heard the term “Certified Financial Planner” I asked him? We spent some time talking about fee-only financial planners, and fee-based financial planners, how they are different and how they differ from fee-only investment advisers — in New Jersey and all around the country.

We looked up a few certified financial planners in Monmouth County, NJ. We found some planners in Red Bank, and more in the county seat, Freehold, NJ. He said Freehold and Marlboro were too far. He was really looking for a financial planner in Manasquan, Spring Lake or Wall Township. He thought he needed a CFP or fee-only adviser who could really help him out and answer his questions.

I told my friend that maybe we should back up. Do you need help with your personal finances? Or do you need help managing your investments? Because there are some financial planners in New Jersey that can help you specifically plan for retirement, and others who can help you plan for your estate. Estate planning in New Jersey is a hot topic lately, is that what you need?

But the longer we talked, the more questions arose. He began to mix up the differences between them and wondered, “How does someone become a financial planner?” And, “what is the annual salary for a financial planner in NJ?” And another question: “So, how does a certified financial planner get paid?”

I told him that really depends. Did you want your planner to implement stock trades, or simply give you planning suggestions? Did you want a written financial plan, including your goals?

These are all great questions. But I sensed he was getting overwhelmed and confused. Because then he started with: “Maybe I don’t need a CFP in New Jersey. Maybe I can find a financial planner online. Maybe all I really need is a stockbroker in New Jersey!”

I think we needed a break, so we drove across Route 35 in Wall Township and headed down to Manasquan Beach. Probably one of the nicest stretches of beach on the New Jersey Shore is right in our backyard in Monmouth County.

My friend said he really appreciated my help in trying to find an independent financial planner here in NJ, but he believed he may not really be ready to speak with a planner. He even mentioned he was going to do more research and look for a course in personal financial planning, and maybe buy some financial planning software.

I think the lesson from all of this is not to get hung up on trying to find the best financial planner in New Jersey, or even the best stockbroker or investment advisor in NJ. Besides, what may work for one individual may not work for someone else. You need to find a financial planner, stockbroker, CFP or adviser who you can communicate with, that will be the best person to help you with your personal finances.

The funny thing is, my friend called me yesterday and asked me if I knew the difference between a Chartered Financial Planner and a Certified Financial Planner…and which of these financial planners are best for someone in New Jersey. I suppose our conversation didn’t sink in after all.

Since last week’s podcast, a lot has happened: earthquakes, a tsunami, and nuclear chaos. The VIX index (the volatility index) has skyrocketed – we can continue to expect plenty of volatility in the upcoming weeks. Tuesday the market was down 200 points; we saw the same on Wednesday, Thursday the market was up 160.

Strap on your seat-belts, get ready for plenty of volatility.

As a reminder to our regular listeners and to inform our newer listeners: the media makes money by selling advertising. Because of this, the news tends to be more sensational in an attempt to keep you watching (or reading).

We have been saying for a while the market has been over-bought and in need of a pullback. What’s happening now in the market is…not a surprise. The long term charts are still positive. Although it’s been rough, what we’re going through now may ultimately just be a correction, and not a re-run of 2008.

The thing that really gets me is we can spend months watching the market climb up inch by inch, only to give it all back in a week’s time.

The downside tends to happen a lot faster than the upside.

The biggest difference between now and 2008 is this: In late 2007, the relative strength chart measuring “cash vs. the stock market” actually flipped over, and started to favor cash.

Look, this chart doesn’t change like very often, so when it does flip over, it is a very big deal.

This chart answers the question, “which is currently stronger?” Putting money into cash, or putting money into the stock market? This is why we prefer to focus on what is happening now – instead of trying to predict what will happen next. Like we said last week, the big picture backdrop is still positive, but the short term is very, very sloppy.

Let’s take a side-bar and talk about the events in Japan in the last week:

1. Terrible 9.0 Earthquake
2. A 30-foot Tsunami Wave
3. Nuclear Reactor “issues”

I’m stunned at the political posturing and rhetoric thrown around regarding nuclear power here in the United States.

Let’s be clear: this nuclear power station has been online for 40 years and survived a 9.0 earthquake. The station was still working after the earthquake – it was the tsunami that knocked out the power.

Are any of the nuclear power plants in the US in danger of being hit by a tsunami? I don’t believe so.

But you won’t hear that on the news. As usual, the media drums up emotions.

It is this reason why we rely on point and figure charts when managing your money here at Mullooly Asset Management. These charts do not show any events, or points where you can add in emotion. Emotion is an ingredient you don’t need in this recipe.

These charts simply show the ongoing relationship between supply and demand. And again, that’s not a theory- it’s an economic law.

My 401k Account: What Do I Do Now?

Because your 401k account is growing more and more important to you, the roller coaster swings in the stock market really frustrate the hell out of you. You have worked hard, and focused on managing your career, not your 401k. Now must you focus on managing your 401k too? So what do you do with your 401(k)?

I’ve heard many say their 401k is an out-of-control pool of money. They have no guidance, no information and are too damn busy to monitor this on a daily — or even monthly — basis.

But this 401k account is the money you will need to retire on. Pensions and social security may not be guaranteed to be there down the road. I meet a lot of folks who are hoping the market is rallying when it is time to retire. Otherwise, they are screwed in big trouble.

My 401(k): How Do You Get This Money Under Control?

Your day to day responsibilities at work do not include reviewing the mutual fund choices in your 401k at work.
You’ve called the “Help Desk” for more information about the investment choices in your 401k, and find lots of young, helpful, cheery people. The person you won’t meet… the one who is willing to say “you dunce, get OUT of that fund before it’s too late!”

You have asked:

Your broker,

401k Help Center: Not Always Helpful
Your financial adviser,
The folks on the toll free line …for guidance.
And you’ve tried managing this money on your own.

My 401k: Why can’t the Help Desk actually… “Help”?

The help desk will not help you because:
They either work at a call-center. Five minutes later they may (conceivably) be answering calls for a pest control company. Or may not even be in the same country as you.

You may be lucky enough to be speaking with a representative from the company, someone who may actually hold a securities license. But they don’t know you — or your situation, how much help will they actually be? Will they say “Oh no, you didn’t invest in THAT fund, did you?”

Here is the Big Problem: The Call Center guy is *prohibited* from offering investment advice.

Isn’t that the dumbest thing you have ever heard? But it is true. Yet they continue to boast “if you need help, just call.” What many 401k investors do not know is that the help line is limited to only discussing the choices available to you in the 401k plan, and help you make a transaction between funds. No advice!

Lovely, right?

So the people on the company 401k “help line” cannot “help me” with the “help” I need the most?
Right. The folks at the other end of the line are either unlicensed employees of a brokerage firm (or licensed employees of a brokerage firm). Unable to take the fiduciary responsibility of providing investment advice.

My 401-k: Can my broker/financial planner help me?

It’s possible. But just suppose: you meet with your planner or broker once or twice a year to review. Then, what happens if the markets change right after we meet? What if the money in my 401k account is neck-deep in emerging market funds, and all hell breaks loose on the other side of the globe? Or what if we have put everything into bonds and interest rates begin to climb?

It would be nice to think your broker or financial planner will call you.
Nice, yes. Just probably not realistic. Why? Because your broker or financial planner is busy trying to get his clients money (where he/she gets PAID) out of harm’s way first.
